THE ON-DUTY MEME

We're all used to playing our characters in special circumstances--sharing a bath, AUed into a robot, in the rain, lost in the ball pit (well that's one way to get your extra hour)...but how often do we get to actually play our characters doing their day jobs?

This meme is for just that.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Write a starter about your character going about their day/night at work, wherever that may be.

If your character is a doctor, write them checking in on a patient, or having a meal in the hospital cafeteria. If they're a lawyer, write them at court. If they're a professional ghost-hunter? Yeah, that'd be a pretty neat starter too!

Be sure to include some sort of hook that allows other characters to join in the action, even if your character works alone. Maybe they brought their pile of research out to a cafe? Maybe they need help with something?

2. Respond to other characters' starters.

3. Thread. Have a good day at work, or perhaps an awful day at work.

The Personal Hygiene Intimacy Meme

Personal hygiene is just that - personal. By the time we've come to a point in our lives where we notice that the concept exists and we should be prudent about it, we can take care of ourselves. There are also many practical reasons why we don't involve other people in this process. We're not too keen on showing off parts to be cleaned that are private in most contexts, and there's definitely an ingrained aversion to showing so much soft, fleshy skin. Hot water or a sharp razor could spell dangerous with a capital D should they come into the hands of someone with a vendetta against you. No need to be extra vulnerable.

So, if you're involving another person in your cleansing routines, it must be someone you trust. Not only that, but it's most likely someone you're comfortable with and likely at least somewhat open to being intimate with. You may not be dropping all your clothing in front of them, but it's still you opening yourself up to touching and closeness unparalleled in more "usual" moments.

Established and burgeoning couples (or not-so-couples) can bond through this showing of care and good faith. Will you like being pampered and find the attention endearing? Or will things go terribly, terribly wrong?

...you never should have let them near that shaving cream.

TABOO meme

Most societies have certain mores that are unspoken rules; humanity itself even has such conventions, grilled subconsciously into our minds for our own safety. Don't go out alone at night. Avoid getting wet when it's cold. Don't pick fights with those stronger than you...okay, some of us missed the boat on the last one, but the point still stands. Society's rules tend to be more variable, though they apply to most aspects of life - including sex. In fact, bending the rules on what's considered acceptable in romance and sexual encounters can lead to anything from ostracization to death, depending on the time and culture.

So, play it close to the chest if you're going to do a big, big, big t a b o o. Is it worth the risk?

Who does your character want to get it in with? We're talking celebrity crushes, fictional characters, the Yellow Power Ranger, people that are way out of their league, office mates who don't even know they exist, exes who they can't stop thinking about, the weather lady on Channel 4, hot people who've they've only had in dreams, people that they'd LOVE to have in reality if they could... Well? List 'em!

how to play

1. Create a top-level with a list of your character's current Bangable Bucket List™ — a list of people they'd tap if they could! For a softer option, maybe this could be a list of people to kiss, or just a list of people they'd like to meet one day. And for the more stubborn characters, let's say some forced honesty is in place here. Blank top-levels will be deleted!

2. Tag around and judge each other's lists. Britney Spears is a good choice, but Jennifer Love Hewitt is dating yourself a bit.
Plus, there's always the off chance that your character will see themselves on someone else's list! How exciting!

3. Bonus bragging rights for those who've tackled someone on your list and has stories to tell about it (but not THAT many bonus points, because it's rude to kiss and tell!)

Forced Proximity

The forced proximity trope takes two people who should logically never fall in love because of the above reasons and removes them from their “known world.” Sometimes this means physically relocating them, and other times it simply means creating enough of a disturbance in their daily lives/routines that they are sufficiently disoriented. It’s all about the disorientation, shaking up the norm until the characters are enabled to fall in love despite everything that might otherwise separate them.

the rain meme

Ah, rain—the precipitation that the whole world has a love/hate affair with. It waters the garden for free and ruins baseball games. It cools you off in the summer and it causes more ice and sleet to appear in the winter. Sometimes it is lovely and falls at a decent pace for a few hours, other times, it blasts the whole eastern seaboard away.

Poems and songs have been written about it, people have danced in it, others have cursed its entire existence, and still more refuse to go out and drive in it.

To Protect the One You Love

It's a dog eat dog world these days, or at least it seems like it. People have turned off their empathy and allow themselves to merely watch the world and the floundering of others as uninterested, cold bystanders.

...or the person you care for - love - the most.

There's someone like that for you. You'll put yourself in the line of fire for them because your love is that strong...even if you don't realize it yet. Or, maybe, if your definition of "love" is tolerating them more or hating them less than anyone else. It doesn't matter if you have to expose yourself to pain, to others, or to them.

Because even if you're not with them or will ever be with them in that way, some people are worth going up to bat for.

Run Away Together Meme

The two of you have decided to run away together. Bottom line, you've come up with that plan and you've worked up the guts and the means to do it. The most obvious source of a desire to leave together is a romance you can't have until you're gone from this place. It's like all the eloping that happened in those epics of old. How charmingly beautiful! How romantic! Who says the old ways have gone out of style?

But other reasoning behind the decision could be from the serious - you both want to escape imprisonment, an oppressive atmosphere, or a miserable destiny - to the more lighthearted. Maybe an adventure is just what you need, where you'll finally get to see the world...and, slowly, fall in love. Because that's what the crux of all this is: even if the escape started out as mere convenience, you both want to stay close and work together. In the end, when you've finally run where you want to be and the danger, if any, has passed, you may find you don't want to go your separate ways.

Hallways*: a free form horror meme

Wherever you meant to go is not where you are. When you look back, there is no door.

A hallway stretches out in front of you, with branching corridors and closed doors as far as the eye can see. There are hints of other people around - sounds and voices of others who have found themselves trapped in this space, or those who were originally here. Not everyone is friendly.

Just remember: any door you go through will cease to exist. You must go forwards to get out.

So, will you make it?

*It doesn't have to be a hallway, you might end up in a kitchen that tries to eat you, or knee deep in water of a basement somewhere when you were just on the 18^th story.

Good or bad?

Where does your character fall on the spectrum? More specifically, where does your character THINK they fall on the spectrum? After all, everyone thinks they're the hero of their own story.

We as viewers/readers might be able to clearly tell that this unrepentant murderer is the bad guy, but they might not think so. Maybe they think they're justified? On the flip-side, maybe your absolute, hard-working do-gooder still believes they're not doing good enough. It's all about perspective, and how characters view themselves.

No blank top-levels.
"Are you good or bad?"

- Their answer? You tell us!
